About Some new kind of kick presents The Leather Boys (1964) on 35mm

Some new kind of kick – celluloid rock n roll trash on a Saturday night.

It’s nineteen sixty four, it’s raining, the Ace Cafe is home, the North Circular is a race track populated with commuter obstacles. The Leather Boys is the only accurate portrayal of Rockers as far as I know, but it might not even be a biker movie. Well then, what is it? It is a kitchen sink melodrama, it’s a ménage à trois, it’s a depiction of illegal queer lives in the margins, on the fringes. I don’t think that there’s anything else quite like it.

Dudley Sutton’s performance is truly important and in its own way joyous. Come get your chin on the tank for minor aerodynamic advantage, see the English badly navigate their emotional in-articulation, see what fun looked like at probably not quite a ton up while waxed cotton and leather failed to keep you either dry or warm. Don’t come for answers but do come for a cup of tea and to see what questions they faced…

Screened from The Cinema Museum’s 35mm print.
