About A Brief History of the Countryside in 100 Objects with Sally Coulthard in conversation with Gavin Plumley
If you were to choose 100 objects to represent our rural past, what would they be?
Join author Sally Coulthard as she explains why she has chosen the 100 objects showcased in her fascinating new book – and why she feels so strongly that we need to celebrate the daily routines of the peasants, farmers and craftspeople who shaped Britain but whose stories are largely untold in the historical record.
From prehistory to the present day, she reminds us that the things we leave behind provide a connection that no document can match. From farming tools to children’s toys, domestic objects to strange curios, hear how these remnants of the past reveal fascinating insights into an often-forgotten way of life.
Sally Coulthard is an expert in all things nature, history and craft. She has published over twenty-five non-fiction books and her titles have been translated into a dozen languages. She studied Archaeology and Anthropology at the University of Oxford and worked in television before becoming a writer. She lives on a smallholding in North Yorkshire with her family and writes a column for Country Living magazine called A Good Life.
Gavin Plumley is a cultural historian whose work spans numerous periods and disciplines. He is the author of A Home for All Seasons. He also appears frequently on BBC Radio 3 and Radio 4, has written for newspapers and magazines worldwide and gives talks at leading museums and galleries. He grew up in Wales, before moving to London, and studied music at Keble College, Oxford. He lives in Herefordshire with his husband and their dogs. gavinplumley.com
