About Awaking the Lullabies - Singing Workshop
Lullabies are universal acts of human creativity and often represent our first meeting with a human sound that is both magical and soothing. They provide a powerful and gentle connection to the person we sing to, to ourselves and to the world. If you are curious to learn what happens when we acknowledge and nurture these connections long into adulthood and later life, then this workshop might just be the thing for you.
Set against the inspiring backdrop of the rolling hills of The Borders in the beautiful Heriot Toun Studio, "Awaking the Lullabies" is a journey of exploration into our vocal abilities and how they connect mind, body and senses. The workshop offers a safe, welcoming environment, which builds on the rich lore of musical and lyrical intimacy embodied in lullabies.
Advanced knowledge of singing is not required.
The workshop is open to anyone interested in singing traditional cradle songs from around the world, or who wishes to experience a deeper relationship between body and voice. It can enrich personal daily routines or professional life, especially for those working in the fields of music, art, performance, counseling, mental health, education, and community work.
To give our voices space to express themselves and expand their potential, different methods of relaxation, breathing, somatic practices and vocalization are used.
This workshop is suitable for adults only. Unfortunately, we cannot facilitate the needs of children and babies. Bring comfortable clothes and a yoga mat.
This workshop is led by singer-songwriter, anthropologist and lullaby researcher/teacher Katarina Juvancic (Slovenia) who has more than a decade of experience teaching lullaby workshops for (mainly) adults in Scotland, Portugal, Austria, Slovenia and Serbia. She has released an album of field recording of lullabies, and another with the participants of her lullaby workshops. She has attended residential workshops and worked with prominent teachers of improvised singing and movement such as Anne Marie Blink (NL), Sainkho Namtchylak (Tuva), Irena Tomažin (SI), and Alessio Castellacci (IT).
What do participants say about this workshop
* Katarina’s lullaby workshop was really moving, and it has stayed with me for weeks afterwards. It was both a personal and collective opportunity to explore the power and truth women’s voices and bodies know, but are so often repressed. An invigorating, memorable and inspiring experience. (Lizzie)
* I would come away feeling invigorated, refreshed, revitalised, empowered, encouraged, inspired...the experience was a huge boost at a time when I needed it. (Becky)
* Here’s the thing: My cells shifted. … It was beautiful. (Karine)
* Thank you for helping me accepting my voice. You have an incredible ability to awake our potentials. (Bernarda)
